Protests in paradise as riots follow coup in Maldives

Newly appointed Maldives President Mohamed Waheed Hassan denied being part of any plan to remove President Mohamed Nasheed. "Do I look like someone who will bring about a coup d'etat?" he asked journalists on Wednesday.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated 12:05 p.m. ET: Supporters of the Maldives former president rioted through the streets and seized some police stations Wednesday to demand his reinstatement as the country's new leader appealed for an end to the political turmoil roiling this Indian Ocean nation.

Allies said former leader Mohamed Nasheed and other top party officials were beaten by police in the street chaos. The nation's first democratically elected president, Nasheed resigned Tuesday after police joined months of street protests against his rule and soldiers defected.

Late Wednesday evening, Nasheed supporters seized some small police stations but larger ones stayed under official control, police spokesman Amhed Shyam said. Residents told local reporters that as many as 10 police stations on small islands may have been seized. The Maldives is made up of nearly 1,200 scattered islands, some of which have just a few hundred residents.

Nasheed said Wednesday he was forced to resign at gunpoint and he promised to fight to return to office.

"We will come to power again," Nasheed said. "We will never step back. I will not accept this coup and will bring justice to the Maldivians."

New President Mohammed Waheed Hassan denied claims there was a coup or a plot to oust Nasheed. The former vice president, he said he had not prepared to take over the country and called for a unity coalition to be formed to help it recover.

"Together, I am confident, we'll be able to build a stable and democratic country," he said, adding that his government intended to respect the rule of law.

Later in the day, he appeared to be consolidating his power by appointing a new military chief and police commissioner.

A U.N. team is expected in the country later this week.

Original post: MALE -- The ex-president of the Maldives said on Wednesday that he was forced to resign at gunpoint, despite earlier claims by the Indian Ocean resort islands' new leader that there had been no coup.

"Yes, I was forced to resign at gunpoint," Mohamed Nasheed told reporters after his party meeting a day after his resignation. "There were guns all around me and they told me they wouldn't hesitate to use them if I didn't resign.

The Maldives, one of the world's most high-profile luxury tourist destinations, installed Mohamed Waheed Hassan as president on Tuesday after the man credited with bringing democracy to the islands resigned, apparently under military pressure following a police mutiny. It was not immediately clear who was holding the guns.

"I call on the chief justice to look into the matter of who was behind this coup. We will try our best to bring back the lawful government," said Nasheed, a former pro-democracy political prisoner who campaigned successfully for democratic reforms and was elected to office in 2008.

Just 24 hours after police joined opposition protesters in attacking the military headquarters and seizing the state TV station, the streets of the capital island, Male, were calm as people went to work and children to school.

Trouble in paradise: Maldives president quits after cops mutiny

Former Vice-President Waheed, at his first news conference as president, said he was holding discussions with all Maldivian parties and expected to have nominations for his cabinet ready in a few days.

He denied being part of any plan to remove President Mohamed Nasheed, whose party described his ouster as a coup.

"Do I look like someone who will bring about a coup d'etat?" Waheed asked. "There was no plan. I was not prepared at all."

The political tumult, like most of everyday Maldivian life, was far from the tourists who stream to the chain of desert islands, seeking sun-and-sand paradise at luxury resorts that can command $1,000 a night.? Tourism is estimated to account for two-thirds of the Maldives' gross domestic product of about $1 billion.

Nasheed resigned and was later freed from military custody. Waheed was sworn in by the speaker of the People's Majlis, or parliament.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement he hoped the "handover of power, which has been announced as a constitutional step to avoid further violence and instability, will lead to the peaceful resolution of the political crisis that has polarized the country."

Nasheed's order to the military to arrest a judge, whom he accused of blocking multimillion dollar corruption cases against members of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's government, set off three weeks of opposition protests that peaked with Tuesday's police revolt.

'Forced to resign'
In the end, elements of the same military marched him into his own office to order his own resignation, a close aide told Reuters in the first witness account of Nasheed's exit.

"The gates of the president's office swung open and in came these unmarked vehicles we've never seen before and Nasheed came out with around 50 soldiers around him, and senior military men we'd never seen before," said Paul Roberts, Nasheed's communications adviser.

Nasheed was brought to his office, met his cabinet, and then went on television to announce his resignation, Roberts said from an undisclosed location.

"He was forced to resign by the military," said Roberts, a 32-year old British citizen. "He could have gone down shooting, but he didn't want blood on his hands. The security forces moved against him."

Amnesty International urged the new government to avoid persecuting people based on political affiliation, amid opposition calls for Nasheed's prosecution and rumors his senior allies would not be allowed to leave the islands.

Although there were some advisories, including from Britain, against travel to Male, most of the Maldives' nearly 1 million annual visitors never reach the capital.

Instead, they are taken straight from the airport island by speedboat or seaplane to their resorts. Flights on Wednesday were arriving as usual.

Economy Watch: January Jobs Jump Broad-Based

February 6, 2012
By Dees Stribling, Contributing Editor

Image courtesy Flickr user j burkhalter

The U.S. economy not only added 243,000 jobs in January, which was a surprise to the dismal scientists expecting something more even more dismal, but the growth turned out to be broad-based, which was something of a surprise as well. Professional and business services added 70,000 jobs during the first month of the year, while employment in leisure and hospitality increased by 44,000, and the (almost) always-growing healthcare sector added 31,000 jobs. Manufacturers added 50,000 jobs and retailers added 19,000.

It?s also worth noting that the Bureau of Labor Statistics revised November and December 2011 employment totals upward: November from an anemic 100,000 to a somewhat healthy 157,000, and December up a little from 200,000 to 203,000. All of these additions to the jobs total in January were in the private sector. Government employment, which has been on a persistent downward trajectory recently?down 276,000 jobs in the last 12 months?didn?t budge much one way or the other in January 2012.

Of course, January marks only the second reasonably strong employment month in row. A good many more months like this are still necessary to add up to a jobs recovery. Also, the BLS reported that the number of people employed part time for economic reasons ? that is, those who want a full-time job but who can?t find one ? is 8.2 million, changed little in January. Moreover, the number of long-term unemployed (those without work for 27 weeks or more, or the hard-core unemployed) was little changed at 5.5 million and accounted for 42.9 percent of the total unemployed.

Greece Government, Opposition Agree to More Austerity

For weeks now, Greece has been playing Default or No Default, perhaps with the fate of the improving U.S. economy in the balance. On Sunday evening, word broke that Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos had persuaded the leaders of the nation?s other major political parties to go along with the demands of creditors (the ?troika? of creditors) and other euro-zone nations to cut public spending in the beleaguered Hellenic Republic by 1.5 percent of Greek GDP. More austerity, in other words.

But it isn?t quite a done deal. Details of the agreement between the government and the three opposition leaders remain to be worked out, and all the political parties in Greece are nervous about the upcoming April elections. Still, news that the Greek parties had agreed on new austerity removed a major stumbling block to the 130 billion euro ($171 billion) payment of the next round of the EU-IMF bailout of the Greece, so maybe for now a euro-zone blowup can be averted (but there still Spain, Portugal and the big-kahuna economy of Italy with blowup potential remaining).

ISM Non-Manufacturing Index Up

The Institute for Supply Management?s Non-Manufacturing Index saw a rise in January, up 3.8 points to 56.8 month-over-month, according to the organization on Friday. The reading represents the 25th month in a row that the U.S. non-manufacturing sector expanded, with readings above 50 meaning expansion. January?s reading was also stronger expansion than during most of 2011, when the index hovered in the low 50s.

Almost all of the components of the index were up, including business activity, new orders, inventories, prices and more. Employment especially was on an upward trajectory, rising from 49.8 in December ? a reading that pointed a little toward contraction ? to 57.4 in January, which is well within the realm of expansion. The only components of the index down in January were supplier deliveries and inventory sentiment (which gauges whether businesses believe their inventories are too high, too low, or just right).

Wall Street took the positive employment numbers to heart on Friday by spiking upward. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 156.82 points, or 1.23 percent, while the S&P 500 was up 1.46 percent and the Nasdaq advanced 1.61 percent.

Another Boeing Loyalist Brightens the Skyline (The Motley Fool)

Thanks to the nuclear buildup in Iran, defense deals are pouring in. Backed by a solid reputation and loyal customers, Boeing (NYSE: BA - News) seems to have successfully cashed in on the scenario, as it ended 2011 with a bang.

After beating close rival Lockheed Martin by winning a $3.5 million multiyear contract from the U.S. Defense Department, Boeing has now retained its valuable customer, Saudi Arabia, in one of the biggest-ever foreign military deals in the United States.

Deal specifics
The Saudi-Boeing deal is valued at a whopping $29.4 billion, with Saudi Arabia acquiring 84 F-15 combat aircraft and modernizing of its existing fleet of 70 airplanes. The deal also includes sale of anti-radiation missiles, munitions, spare parts, maintenance and logistics for many years, along with the training of 5,500 Saudi personnel.

This action-packed deal will be supplemented by Raytheon's (NYSE: RTN - News) cutting-edge radar equipment. The same radar technology is also being used by the two THAAD systems, which Lockheed Martin is selling to the United Arab Emirates.

Boeing will begin delivery of the ordered aircraft in 2015, while the modernization plan will commence in 2014. The company is expected to receive the first installment from the deal a few months from now.

A time-tested relationship
Boeing's relationship with Saudi Arabia dates back 20 years. In 1992, Saudi Arabia purchased 72 F-15s. The value of the transaction totaled $9 billion, which acted as a constant source of revenue for Boeing until 1999. Given the looming defense budget cuts, Boeing sees Saudi Arabia as a market with immense potential.

The current deal is likely to fill Boeing's coffers for a long time. Plus, it will support nearly 50,000 jobs in the U.S. for at least a decade and aid 600 suppliers in 44 states.

The Foolish bottom line
Boeing certainly looks attractive, courtesy of these contracts. Moreover, the Iran tension could mean more contracts for the company in the future. Time to take stock of this one.

3D printer provides woman with a brand new jaw

Paul Marks senior technology correspondent

An 83-year-old Belgian woman is able to chew, speak and breathe normally again after a machine printed her a new jawbone. Made from a fine titanium powder sculpted by a precision laser beam, her replacement jaw has proven as functional as her own used to be before a potent infection, called osteomyelitis, all but destroyed it.

The medics behind the feat say it is a first. "This is a world premiere, the first time a patient?specific implant has replaced the entire lower jaw," says Jules Poukens, the researcher who led the operation at Biomed, the biomedical research department of the University of Hasselt, in Belgium. "It's a cautious, but firm step."

Until now, the largest 3D-printed implant is thought to have been half of a man's upper jawbone, in a 2008 operation in Finland.

In this operation, a 3D printed titanium scaffold was steeped in stem cells and allowed to grow biocompatible tissue inside the abdomen of the recipient. Then, in 2009, researchers reported successfully printing copies of whole thumb bones - opening the way for the replacement of smashed digits using information from MRI scans.

Poukens' team worked with researchers in Belgium and the Netherlands and a 3D printing firm called Layerwise in Leuven, Belgium, which specialises in printing with ultrastrong titanium to make dental implants (like bridges and crowns) and facial and spinal bone implants.

By using an MRI scan of their patient's ailing jawbone to get the shape right, they fed it to a laser sintering 3D printer which fused tiny titanium particles layer by layer until the shape of her jawbone was recreated. It was then coated in a biocompatible ceramic layer. No detail was spared: it even had dimples and cavities that promoted muscle attachment, and sleeves that allowed mandibular nerves to pass through - plus support structures for dental implants the patient might need in future.

The team were astonished at the success of the four-hour jaw implant operation, which took place in June 2011 but which has only just been revealed.? "Shortly after waking up from the anaesthetic the patient spoke a few words, and the day was able to speak and swallow normally again," says Poukens.

It's only the start, predicts Layerwise managing director Peter Mercelis. "Patient?specific implants can potentially be applied on a much wider scale than transplantation of human bone structures."

Since 3D printers can create layers of material only micrometres thick, and from just about any material, researchers are investigating ways to print skin grafts for burns victims from them - and how to build up whole organs from depositing cells in the correct shape.

Controversial Approach to Marriage: Respect Your Husband ...

Controversial Approach to Marriage: Respect Your Husband

May 14, 2008, Cincinnati, Ohio? With 50 percent of all marriages ending in divorce, more and more couples are focusing their attentions on finding ways to ensure that their marriages don?t become just another statistic. As a result, increasing numbers of couples are turning to counseling, therapy and seminars, seeking the answer to a happy and healthy marriage.

Marriage Vows And Wedding Vows.

Offers Marriage Vows And Wedding Vows For Couples Getting Married. 50% Payout.

One Cincinnati expert says an approach that is working, healing and strengthening many marriages across the Midwest, is also one that some professionals might argue is archaic, pass?? and even male chauvinistic.? It?s an approach that deeply impacts, however, the majority of our country ? those who call themselves, ?Christians.?

?In our society today, the notion that wives should respect their husbands is viewed as ?old-school? and not ?progressive?,? says Nina Roesner, Executive Director of Greater Impact Ministries. ?The reality is, however, much like government and industry need leaders such as Presidents and CEOs, so does the societal group of marriage and family, and because our course is biblically-based, we believe the leader is the husband,? added Roesner.

But Roesner is careful to point out to this doesn?t mean husbands have the right to abuse their wives in any way. ?Just the converse, we teach women how important strength, self-esteem and dignity are to a successful marriage, and how wives can play an instrumental role in helping their husbands lead with humility and love. These are the core, foundational principles taught in our courses.? ?This is also the foundation of the new book recently released by Ms. Roesner, The Respect Dare.

Roesner argues that modern ideals of marriage have actually undermined the institution, leading to even more divorces nationwide. ?The problem is everywhere we look, we?re bombarded with images and messages telling us that marriage is all about self and self-fulfillment, and as such, if your needs aren?t being met, it?s time to move on.? Seldom do you hear the Biblical instruction that reads, ?And the wife must respect her husband.?? Even women who do hear that still struggle with how to implement it in their own marriages.? Roesner says she got the idea for her book through the successful application of respect by wives in the Daughters of Sarah? training course she teaches, combined with the book released last year, The Love Dare.? ?If you?ve seen the movie, Fireproof, you see Kirk Cameron acting out this love dare and doing a fabulous job portraying two things:? Christ dying for the church, and a husband laying down his life for his wife.? I wanted to provide women with a ?dare? they could take based on what we already know works to increase connection in marriages.? The book is a combination of real life stories from the Daughters of Sarah? course, and a devotional experience that guides the women through increasing intimacy with both their husband and God.? And while some people may think the principles we?re teaching are outdated and old-fashioned, the reality is?they work.? If you don?t think respect is important to a man, ask him and see what he tells you.?

Roesner, through her course: ?Daughters of Sarah?,? has helped many Tri-State wives. Her next course is slated for June. ?Her book, The Respect Dare, is available at numerous book retailers, including Amazon.

My Husband Is A Good Man But I?m Not Sure If I?m In Love With Him Anymore. What Can I Do?

I recently heard from a wife who could not say enough nice and complementary things about her husband. She slathered on the praise saying that he was a wonderful man and a loving father. She went on and on, but by the tone of the conversation, it as clear that a ?but? was coming. And the ?but was that she didn?t feel the spark, chemistry, or electricity with her husband anymore. And, because of this, she wasn?t sure if she was ?in love? with him.
