Davenport looks to cut 20 positions

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- The city of Davenport is looking to eliminate 20 positions to help reduce a $4.3 million deficit.

KWQC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/AyEHbs ) that department heads have been meeting with the city administrator for budget recommendations.

Five of the positions that would be cut would be from the police department. Five more would come from the fire department. They would be vacant slots that wouldn't' be filled. The rest would come through layoffs.

Alderman Gene Meeker says it's a balancing act the city has to reach and he questions how the city can maintain the same level of services without raising taxes. He says the decision will be a struggle.

But he says the city will not raise taxes, but instead cut the positions in hopes of saving $1.9 million.
