Protesters attack Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in Egypt

Demonstrations have broken out across Egypt calling for the resignation of President Mohamed Morsi and pressuring the Brotherhood that backs him.

An Egyptian protester insults the people inside Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in the Muqattam district in Cairo, Sunday. Massive crowds thronged the streets of Cairo and cities around the country Sunday and marched on the presidential palace in a cheering tide of people that filled a broad avenue for blocks in an attempt to force out the Islamist president.

A crowd made up largely of young men threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at the headquarters, a new villa that had been a major upgrade from the Brotherhood's pre-revolution digs in a dingy Cairo apartment. The petrol bombs burned parts of the building, though did not catch the entire structure on fire.?As of two hours from publication, members of the crowd were trying to break into the building but had not yet managed to breach it. Gunshots rang out in the darkness for several hours as police were nowhere to be seen.

The attack took place as large crowds throughout Egypt went to the streets to demand Mr. Morsi's resignation. A year after he took office as Egypt's first freely elected president, anger and discontent is widespread. And as anger has grown, so has violence against the Brotherhood, a group suppressed by the former Egyptian regime of Hosni Mubarak.

Dozens of its local offices have been attacked or burned down, including several in recent days. Brotherhood supporters are among those killed in clashes between the president's supporters and opponents in recent days in the Nile Delta. Four people were killed today in Assiut and Beni Suef in clashes outside the local offices of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, according to local media.?It was unclear whether they were supporters or opponents of Morsi.?

One man who watched the attack on the Brotherhood headquarters said the violence is justified because group, and Morsi, could not be removed from power through elections. "How can we hope in politics?" asked the man, who gave his name as Saad. "They took power by force. We have to force them out."

Morsi became Egypt's first freely elected president a year ago when he won 51 percent of the vote. But Saad said Morsi has damaged Egypt so much in one year, that it was impossible to wait another three to vote him out of office.

"They want to kill us," said another man when asked why he wanted to break into the headquarters. "They're choking us."?

Other bystanders disagreed with the violence. It appeared that birdshot was fired into the crowd from inside the besieged building.?It was unclear if gunfire was also coming from the crowd. Several young men stumbled away from the area with birdshot wounds to their faces and bodies. One got in a waiting ambulance for treatment before his friend pulled him out, shouting at him that he would be arrested if he went to the hospital.

As some in the crowd attacked the front entrance of the Brotherhood's building, others had a different idea.?"Around to the back, there's an entrance there!" shouted one man, and a crowd followed him as they left to find the back entrance and attempt to break into the building from there.?

Egypt's army has warned last week it would intervene if Egypt descended into chaos following the demonstrations.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Gehad El Haddad,?said on Twitter that a group of ?thugs? was attacking the headquarters, and said two police captains left their posts protecting the headquarters to join the attack. No eyewitnesses reported seeing police engage in the attack. But Morsi has struggled to bring the security forces, long used for suppressing the Muslim Brotherhood, under his control. The police's refusal to protect the Brotherhood headquarters and other Brotherhood offices are a telling sign.

One bystander rejected the Brotherhood spokesman's notion that those in the crowd were paid to attack the building. "Are all these people thugs?" he asked, as he gestured at the packed street, mostly filled with onlookers. "Those inside shooting are the thugs."?

The Egyptian daily Shorouq posted a video on YouTube showing men on top of a Brotherhood building in Gharbeya province, in the Delta, firing on a crowd with shotguns. In December, the Brotherhood sent its members to the presidential palace to disperse an opposition protest there, some members of which had attacked the palace gates with Molotov cocktails. Brotherhood supporters captured, beat, and detained some protesters for hours, according to protesters and videos that appear to show Brotherhood members interrogating protesters and urging them to confess they were paid to attack the palace.?

Rare weight lifting injury required surgery

June 28, 2013 ? A young, healthy man injured himself so severely while weight lifting that he required surgery and nearly a full week in the hospital to recover. The unusual case report of compartment syndrome to the shoulder will be reported online today in Annals of Emergency Medicine.

"Typically, compartment syndrome is associated with the lower extremities, not the shoulder, and with trauma, not exercise," said lead study author Leonard Bunting, MD, FACEP, of Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. "Our patient over-exerted himself so much by weight lifting that he put himself in danger of suffering permanent damage. This is a case where doing something theoretically healthy -- weight training -- actually caused serious injury."

A 23-year-old male came to the emergency department with extreme pain and swelling in his shoulder. He reported having lifted heavier weights than usual the day before. Surgery and aggressive inpatient treatment with intravenous fluids for six days provided complete relief of pain and recovery of a full range of motion.

"Apart from being an unusual complication of weight lifting, this case highlights the unique aspects of bedside ultrasound in evaluation of unusual musculoskeletal conditions," said Dr. Bunting. "The patient's pain was out of proportion to the injury, and a bedside ultrasound exam confirmed muscle edema. The compartment pressures in the injured muscle were incredibly high. Fortunately, he received prompt treatment and went back to the gym a little wiser for the experience."

Matthew Morrison and Renee Puente.

"Glee" star Matthew Morrison is engaged to his girlfriend Renee Puente, a fact he confirmed with a simple tweet, saying he was going to "marry my best friend!"

The news initially came out during Elton John's White Tie and Tierra Ball on Thursday, an event the couple often attend. Coldplay singer Chris Martin dedicated John's "Your Song" to the couple, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and then sang the tune with John himself.

The proposal appears to have been done earlier; E! Online reported that the couple arrived at the event with her already wearing a "huge sparkler" in the appropriate left-hand finger.

Morrison tweeted the news Thursday morning.

They reportedly began dating in 2011, and this will be a first marriage for both.

Southwest Applied Technology College eliminates waiting list for CNA training; courses start July 8

swatc-nursing-program

?

CEDAR CITY - Recently, Southwest Applied Technology College announced that its upcoming Nursing Assistant Certification Program starting July 8, along with all upcoming nursing assistant sessions, will no longer require a waiting list for applicants.

This is good news for potential students who previously had to wait six months to a year to apply for this popular program. It is one of the shorter courses offered at SWATC, only 10 weeks long with a short externship following the course work.

?Now, without a waiting list, we are able to offer enrollment immediately into an upcoming class session, as soon as a student has completed all of their required documentation and made their payment for the course,? Jayne Crabdree of SWATC Team Student Services said. ?We find this encourages students to be proactive in getting themselves prepared to enroll on their own time frame, complete the enrollment process in a timely fashion, to get in and get trained, get certified and then gain employment in this field. It?s a win-win situation for the college and the students that are well prepared and motivated to get started in this training.?

A nursing assistant works in many health care areas under the supervision of a registered nurse. The SWATC program prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed to assist ill patients and the elderly with tasks related to daily living such as assisting with meals, hygiene, getting out of bed and taking vital signs. Successful completion of this program qualifies the student to receive state certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant with the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry.

The next Nursing Assistant Certification Program at SWATC begins July 8. Although the waiting period has been waived, applicants do have some unique qualifications that must be met before acceptance into the program. All students must be age 17 or older on the first day of class and must have the following required immunizations: Hepatitis B series, one dose Tdap, proof of MMR and varicella immunity or vaccinations. In addition, applicants must be CPR certified and have two TB screenings.

Resources

Applications are being accepted at SWATC?s main campus at 510 West 800 South in Cedar City, or online. Students must be enrolled by July 3, as Student Services will be closed July 4 and 5 for Independence Day. The next nursing assistant session will start September 17. For more information, call 435-586-2899.

Twitter Sees a Surge in Government Information Requests

Twitter sees itself as the digital incarnation of the town square, eliminating time and distance as barriers to unfiltered communication among citizens. In this role as the world?s unofficial open idea exchange (in 140 characters or less, of course), the company is finding that governments, law enforcement agencies and even its own Twitterverse are increasingly holding it accountable for how people use its microblogging service.

The social network appears to be taking this newfound responsibility seriously. During a Webcast conversation on Wednesday with Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Jonathan Rauch, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo discussed how his company responds to this growing scrutiny. He also talked about Twitter?s attempts to help users filter the fire hose of information they face each day as well as the pros and cons of pseudonymous tweeters.

Although he declined to comment specifically on the U.S. National Security Agency?s PRISM digital surveillance program, Costolo articulated Twitter?s stance on cooperating with government and law enforcement requests. ?When we receive a valid, specific request in the countries [where] we operate, we will honor it,? he said. ?Those that are not legal and valid, we will push back on.? Twitter is conspicuously absent from the list of tech companies?including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo?accused of complying with the NSA?s requests for user data.

Twitter?s computer servers?like those of many Web sites?automatically record information generated by users. This may include a user?s IP address, location, mobile carrier and the device used to access the Twitter account. The company says it deletes this data or removes any common account identifiers?such as username, full IP address or e-mail address?after 18 months.

In the past year Twitter has begun to publish a biannual transparency report highlighting trends in government requests it has received for user information and content removal. (Google publishes a similar report). ?We would like more companies to do this,? Costolo said. ?Our users have a right to know when their information has been requested so they can fight the request if they wish.?

The Twitter report also indicates how the company responded to those government requests, which have increased steadily in the past year. Twitter received 849 such requests during the first half of 2012 and 1,009 during the second half?the lion?s share coming from the U.S. government. The latest report will be published in a few weeks. ?When you don?t have any idea what information is being requested, you can only imagine what the government wants,? Costolo said. ?More organizations should participate in these transparency reports because they help people understand exactly what is going on. Then you can disagree or agree with the specifics rather than assumptions.?

Mobile devices offer people a means of ubiquitous online communication?they also give companies a way to track those people using the devices? geolocation capabilities. This raises questions about privacy that have been little more than an afterthought to this point, Costolo noted. Still, he pointed out that there?s no need to be fatalistic about the future of privacy, given that Twitter and many other social networking sites require users to opt in for features such as geolocation that broadcast a user?s whereabouts whenever they log on.

One of Twitter?s main goals, not surprisingly, is improving its ability to curate important events so the most relevant information is easy to find. ?Right now you get the reverse chronological order of the tweets, but it would be nice to see a graphic of spikes in the conversation,? Costolo said. ?It would be nice to be able to scroll back to [a] particular moment.? He likened this capability to a digital video recorder for social media that would help Twitter users more quickly get to the substance of a conversation.

Twitter has experimented with ways to filter out some of the background noise that obscures more relevant reporting and reactions to important events. ?We tried a couple of things during the [London 2012] Olympics, such as curating tweets from the more important sources [such as broadcasters and analysts], but it felt like you were in a very quiet studio,? he said. ?You lost that roar of the crowd that makes [Twitter] the public town square. We became more of an aggregator.?

Twitter is also looking at ways to preserve user anonymity without facilitating troll-like behavior where pseudonymous account-holders use their tweets to harass other users. Anonymity is especially important when Twitter is used as a tool for social change, with protests in Turkey being the latest example, said Costolo, who did not comment further on the situation in that country. The ability to use a pseudonym is crucial to enabling open political discourse, he added. ?You can use our platform to say what you believe.? Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned Twitter as a way to spread lies about his government, which has asked Twitter to reveal the identities of users who posted ?messages deemed insulting to the government or prime minister or which flouted people's personal rights,? according to Reuters.

Anonymity does create headaches for Twitter beyond governments demanding user identities, Costolo acknowledged. Pseudonymous tweeters are a problem when they engage in cyber bullying and can be particularly vicious in what they say about celebrities and other public figures. He added, ?We have to do a better job of filtering out egregious and repeated harassment.?

Former Warner Music Intern Files a Second Lawsuit

By Tim Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - A former Warner Music Group intern who's suing the music company has filed a second suit, this time against a New York City recording studio.

In a class-action complaint filed in U.S. District Court in New York on Wednesday, Justin Henry says that he worked for Chung King studios from October 2008 until August 2010. During that time, Henry says, he wasn't paid minimum wage and didn't receive overtime compensation. The class-action suit claims that he wasn't the only one to endure such alleged treatment.

The suit claims that Henry and other members of the class worked "in various positions related to the maintenance and operations of the music studio." Henry claims to have "typically worked from Thursday through Sunday, consistently from 10 p.m. until 10 a.m." From October 2008 to December 2009, the suit alleges, Henry was given no compensation at all, and that from January 2009 to August 2010, he was paid a flat rate of $200 per week, "regardless of the amount of hours worked."

The suit contends that Henry and others in his situation are owed minimum wage plus overtime under federal and U.S. law.

Henry's suit against Warner Bros. Music Group, filed earlier this month, claims that WMG subsidiary Atlantic Music Group withheld wages from Henry and other employees beginning in or around June 2007. Henry's suit claims that he worked as an unpaid intern for the company, answering phones, making copies and performing other tasks, regularly working from 10 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m.

A number of lawsuits from interns seeking compensation for their labor have been filed recently. Earlier this month, two interns who worked on the film "Black Swan" won a partial summary judgment from a judge who found that interns Alexander Footman and Eric Glatt are entitled to pay for their work on the film under the Fair Labor Standards Act and New York labor law.

A lawsuit was also recently filed against publisher Conde Nast by two former interns for the company.

Ecuador heats rhetoric as Obama downplays Snowden

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) ? President Barack Obama tried to cool the international frenzy over Edward Snowden on Thursday as Ecuador stepped up its defiance and said it was preemptively rejecting millions in trade benefits that it could lose by taking in the fugitive from his limbo in a Moscow airport.

The country seen as likeliest to shelter the National Security Agency leaker seemed determined to prove it could handle any repercussions, with three of its highest officials calling an early-morning news conference to "unilaterally and irrevocably renounce" $23 million a year in lowered tariffs on products such as roses, shrimp and frozen vegetables.

Fernando Alvarado, the secretary of communications for leftist President Rafael Correa, sarcastically suggested the U.S. use the money to train government employees to respect human rights.

Obama, meanwhile, sought to downplay the international chase for the man he called "a 29-year-old hacker" and lower the temperature of an issue that has raised tensions between the U.S. and uneasy partners Russia and China. Obama said in Senegal that the damage to U.S. national security has already been done and his top focus now is making sure it can't happen again.

"I'm not going to have one case with a suspect who we're trying to extradite suddenly be elevated to the point where I've got to start doing wheeling and dealing and trading on a whole host of other issues, simply to get a guy extradited so he can face the justice system," Obama said at a joint news conference with Senegal's President Macky Sall.

While the Ecuadorean government appeared angry over U.S. threats of punishment if it accepts Snowden, there were also mixed signals about how eager it was to grant asylum. For days, officials here have been blasting the U.S. and praising Snowden's leaks of NSA eavesdropping secrets as a blow for global human rights.

But they also have repeatedly insisted that they are nowhere close to making a decision on whether Snowden can leave Moscow, where he is believed to be holed up in an airport transit zone, for refuge in this oil-rich South American nation.

"It's a complex situation, we don't know how it'll be resolved," Correa told a news conference Thursday in his first public comments on the case aside from a handful of postings on Twitter.

The Ecuadorean leader said that in order for Snowden's asylum application to be processed, he would have to be in Ecuador or inside an Ecuadorean Embassy, "and he isn't." Another country would have to permit Snowden to transit its territory for that requirement to be met, Correa said.

WikiLeaks, which has been aiding Snowden, announced earlier he was en route to Ecuador and had received a travel document. On Wednesday, the Univision television network displayed an unsigned letter of safe passage for him.

Officials on Thursday acknowledged that the Ecuadorean Embassy in London had issued a June 22 letter of safe passage for Snowden that calls on other countries to allow him to travel to asylum in Ecuador. But Ecuador's secretary of political management, Betty Tola, said the letter was invalid because it was issued without the approval of the government in the capital, Quito.

She also threatened legal action against whoever leaked the document, which she said "has no validity and is the exclusive responsibility of the person who issued it."

"This demonstrates a total lack of coordination in the department of foreign affairs," said Santiago Basabe, a professor of political science at the Latin American School of Social Sciences in Quito. "It's no small question to issue a document of safe passage or a diplomatic document for someone like Snowden without this decision being taken directly by the foreign minister or president."

The renunciation of trade benefits was a dramatic but mostly symbolic threat. The U.S Congress was widely expected to let the benefits lapse in coming weeks, for reasons unrelated to the Snowden case. And if they continued, it appeared highly unlikely that the Ecuadorean government would be able to unilaterally cancel tariff benefits that went directly to their country's exporters.

Behind Ecuador's mixed messages, some analysts saw not confusion but internal divisions in the Ecuadorean government.

Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, a think tank focused on Latin America, said many in Washington believed that Correa, a leftist elected to a third term in February, had been telegraphing a desire to moderate and take a softer tack toward the United States and private business.

Harder-core leftists led by Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino may be seeking to maintain a tough line, he said, a division expressing itself in confusing messages.

"I think there really are different factions within the government on this," Shifter said. "Correa wants to become more moderate. That has been the signal that has been communicated in Washington."

Embarrassment for the Obama administration over the surveillance revelations continued as the British newspaper The Guardian reported that it allowed the National Security Agency for more than two years to collect records detailing email and Internet use by Americans. The story cited documents showing that under the program a federal judge could approve a bulk collection order for Internet metadata every 90 days.

A senior Obama administration confirmed the program and said it ended in 2011, according to The Guardian. The records were first collected during the Bush administration and involved "communications with at least one communicant outside the United States or for which no communicant was known to be a citizen of the United States."

The report said that eventually the NSA was allowed to "analyze communications metadata associated with United States persons and persons believed to be in the United States," according to a 2007 Justice Department memo marked secret.

The U.S. administration was expected to decide by Monday whether to grant Ecuador export privileges under the Generalized System of Preferences, a program meant to spur development and growth in poorer countries. The deadline was set long before the Snowden affair and officials said Thursday that there would be an ongoing review of Ecuador's privileges under the program.

More broadly, a larger trade pact allowing reduced tariffs on more than $5 billion in annual exports to the U.S. is up for congressional renewal before July 21. While approval of the Andean Trade Preference Act has long been seen as doubtful in Washington, Ecuador has been lobbying strongly for its renewal.

On Wednesday, Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, pledged to lead an effort to block extension of U.S. tariff benefits if Ecuador grants asylum to Snowden, who turned 30 last week. Nearly half of Ecuador's billions a year in foreign trade depends on the United States.

The Obama administration said Thursday that accepting Snowden would damage the overall relationship between the two countries and analysts said it was almost certain that granting the leaker asylum would lead the U.S. to cut roughly $30 million a year in military and law enforcement assistance.

Granting asylum to Snowden would cause "great difficulties in our bilateral relationship," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said. "If they take that step, that would have very negative repercussions."

Alvarado, the communications minister, said his country rejects economic "blackmail" in the form of threats against the trade measures.

"The preferences were authorized for Andean countries as compensation for the fight against drugs, but soon became a new instrument of pressure," he said. "As a result, Ecuador unilaterally and irrevocably renounces these preferences."

Alvarado did not explicitly mention the separate effort to win trade benefits under the presidential order.

He did suggest, however, how the U.S. could use the money saved from Ecuadorean tariffs ? to train government employees to respect citizens' rights.

"Ecuador offers the United States $23 million a year in economic aid, an amount similar to what we were receiving under the tariff benefits, with the purpose of providing human rights training that will contribute to avoid violations of people's privacy, that degrade humanity," he said.

U.S. court to hear oral arguments in net neutrality case on September 9

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The federal appeals court in Washington on Tuesday set September 9 as the date for oral arguments in the so-called net neutrality case that could be seminal for federal regulation of Internet traffic.

The highly anticipated hearings, originally expected to take place this past spring, will pit Verizon Communications Inc against the Federal Communications Commission as the biggest U.S. wireless provider challenges the FCC's order that guides how Internet service providers manage their networks.

The ruling of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will have major implications for the increasingly partisan debate over the degree of regulatory power possessed by the federal communications agency.

Net neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be able to access any Web content and use any applications they choose, without restrictions or varying charges imposed by the Internet service provider or the government.

Judges Judith Rogers, Laurence Silberman and David Tatel will hear the arguments in the case, according to the order issued on Tuesday.

The FCC's 2011 open Internet rules require Internet providers to treat all Web traffic equally and give consumers equal access to all lawful content, even if, for instance, it comes from a competitor or disagrees with their political views.

Verizon and other critics argue that the FCC's rules are an unwarranted government intrusion into regulating the Internet, including which content consumers may access and which companies may provide that content, and should be thrown out.

Public interest groups have criticized the rules as too weak, saying the FCC was swayed by big industry players. Democrats on Capitol Hill have said they would push against the court's decision if it sides with Verizon.

The FCC's position in the case received a boost from the Supreme Court in May, when in a separate case it ruled in favor of giving regulatory agencies deference in interpreting the extent of their own regulatory authority.

The case is Verizon v. FCC, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, case No. 11-1355 (and consolidated cases).

PFT: Ravens' Pierce robbed at gunpoint, carjacked

Chip KellyAP

Chip Kelly likely won?t face any discipline of any kind for breaking NCAA recruiting rules at Oregon. The NCAA?s 18-month punishment is meaningless after Kelly signed a multi-year contract to coach the Eagles, and the NFL probably won?t wade into the matter, just as it didn?t wade into the matter when Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was found to have violated recruiting rules at USC.

So far, the NFL hasn?t had anything to say about the news today that Kelly broke NCAA rules. Asked for a reaction to Kelly?s NCAA discipline, the league office told PFT only, ?We are not familiar yet with the details and prefer not to comment.?

But the NFL has already set a bad precedent when it comes to discipline for violating NCAA rules, and it?s now fair to criticize the league if it doesn?t discipline Kelly for violating NCAA rules. That bad precedent was set when the NFL suspended quarterback Terrelle Pryor for the first five games of his NFL career, a suspension that was the same as the suspension that he would have served if he had remained at Ohio State for his senior year. The NFL?s contention was that Pryor deserved punishment because he manipulated the league?s eligibility rules, but the reality is that the NFL allowed Pryor to enter the supplemental draft. Once the league ruled that he was eligible to play, suspending him for something he had done previously never made a lot of sense: Why is it the NFL?s place to enforce a suspension that the NCAA handed down?

At the time of the Pryor suspension, the NFL probably thought it was a unique situation that wouldn?t repeat itself. But it turned out that shortly after the league suspended Pryor, the Colts hired his old coach, Jim Tressel, to be their replay assistant. Tressel had been fired at Ohio State in connection with the same NCAA rules violations that got Pryor suspended, so the Colts? decision to bring Tressel on board was heavily questioned ? why is Tressel allowed to coach right away if Pryor isn?t allowed to play right away? After those questions surfaced, Tressel was quickly handed a six-game suspension of his own. The Tressel suspension was made by the Colts, although NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that if the Colts hadn?t suspended Tressel, he would have.

Ultimately, the NFL set a bad precedent when it suspended Pryor for something he had done when he wasn?t even an NFL player yet, then compounded that bad precedent after it was caught off-guard when the Colts hired Tressel. The NFL almost certainly won?t compound that mistake again and suspend Kelly for his NCAA transgressions. And that will serve as a reminder that the league erred when it suspended Pryor.

Mursi to make his move as Egypt protests loom

By Alastair Macdonald and Shadia Nasralla

CAIRO (Reuters) - President Mohamed Mursi will speak to the Egyptian people on Wednesday in a televised address that could determine his political survival as millions prepare to rally to demand his removal this weekend.

Fears of a showdown in the streets between Mursi's Islamist supporters and a broad coalition of the disaffected have led people to stock up on food. Long lines of cars outside fuel stations have snarled roads in Cairo and other cities.

The army and police are preparing to contain any trouble, adding men and barriers around important public buildings. The government promises to allow peaceful protests but many fear that, with huge crowds, any trouble could spin out of control.

The army has warned politicians it could effectively take charge again if they fail to reconcile. Some in the anti-Mursi camp might welcome that, but Islamists say they would fight any "coup" against Egypt's first freely elected leader.

Mursi, who marks his first year in office on Sunday, has given no hint of the contents of what aides called an "important speech". It is due to start around 9:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. EDT) at a Cairo hall before an invited audience. Some speculate he may reshuffle his cabinet to try to defuse the anger against him.

Some observers fear Egypt may be about to erupt again, two years after the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak. Politics are polarized between Mursi's disciplined Muslim Brotherhood and disparate opponents who have lost a series of elections.

The deadlock has contributed to a deepening economic crisis and the government is running out of cash.

Washington has urge Mursi to bring the opposition into the political process and to press ahead with economic reforms.

Liberal critics worry about Islamist rule - a coalition of local human rights groups accused Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood on Wednesday of crimes rivaling Mubarak's and of setting up a "religious, totalitarian state". But many Egyptians are simply frustrated by falling living standards and fear chaos.

Lining up at a bank machine in downtown Cairo, IT trainer Amgad al-Fishawi, 40, said he feared cash could be hard to find in the coming days and echoed the resignation felt by many at the deadlock: "Mursi won't promise too much," he said. "Nobody's paying attention. The people don't expect anything from him."

ARMY ALERT

The army is held in high regard by Egyptians, especially since it pushed aside Mubarak following the 2011 uprising. Its chief issued a warning on Sunday, urging compromise while also defending the legitimacy of Mursi's election.

One senior Western diplomat in Cairo said the army might try to impose a solution, especially if the political deadlock turns violent: "The margin for a political solution is definitely very narrow," he said. "If (violence) crosses a certain threshold, the role of the army might become by default more proactive."

Islamists, oppressed for decades, fear a return of military rule and hardliners warn of a fight if the generals intervene. They accuse Mubarak-era institutions, including courts, state media, police and civil service, of working to undermine Mursi.

An officer in one of Egypt's internal security agencies told Reuters this week that the country needed to be "cleansed" of the Islamists who he described as terrorists. He said that the protest rallies could be the trigger for change.

The army, still heavily funded by Washington as it was under Mubarak, and Western governments have been urging Mursi to bridge differences with his non-Islamist opponents. He says he has tried. They say he and his Muslim Brotherhood, along with harder line allies, are trying to monopolize the state.

Mursi says a petition demanding he quit - which liberal organizers say has 15 million signatures - is undemocratic. In that, he has support from Islamists, who have staged shows of strength in recent days and plan a major Cairo rally on Friday.

Nationwide opposition rallies, are due to start on Sunday but could begin earlier.

LOW EXPECTATIONS

"This demonstration is spontaneous and comes from the Egyptian people. We hope that it will bring the government ultimately to a place where the reforms are effected and choices that need to be made about the economy are implemented," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia.

"We will obviously hope that it will not produce violence and be a moment of catalyzing positive change for Egypt itself."

The opposition have low expectations of the speech which Mursi appears to be planning to make in front of a partisan crowd. Liberal activists plan to watch it on a screen in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where the revolt against Mubarak began in January 2011.

Liberal coalition spokesman Khaled Dawoud said: "He missed several opportunities in the past to build bridges with the Egyptian people. At this point, it's too late for any possible measures, short of early elections, to stop the demonstrations."

Dawoud likened Mursi's address to speeches made by Mubarak during the revolt. The army eased him aside after 18 days and took power itself until Mursi took office on June 30 last year.

Among criticisms of Mursi, a less than charismatic speaker who became the Brotherhood's presidential candidate as a last-minute stand-in, is that he has turned for support to harder line Islamist groups, including former militants.

The lynching of five Shi'ite Muslims on Sunday revived fears among minorities, including Egypt's several million Christians, and has been used by the opposition to portray Mursi as tolerant of an extremist Sunni Muslim fringe.

Spacewalking Cosmonauts Prime Space Station for New Laboratory

Two cosmonauts took a spacewalk outside the International Space Station Monday (June 24) to prepare the orbiting outpost for the arrival of a new Russian laboratory later this year.

Clad in bulky Orlan spacesuits, cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Alexander Misurkin?spent more than six hours outside the space station?to test automated docking system cables and install equipment to aid the arrival of the new Russian Multipurpose Laboratory, a science module slated to launch to the orbiting laboratory by the end of 2013. The spacewalk began at 9:32 a.m. EDT (1332 GMT).

Yurchikhin and Misurkin successfully tested the docking system cables that will be used to help the new Multipurpose Laboratory module dock itself at the station when it arrives. The spacewalkers also installed cable clamps to hold the cables that will route power and data from the U.S. segment of the space station to the new laboratory module. [See Photos of the Russian Spacewalk]

Still, it wasn't all work and no play for the hard-working cosmonauts.

"Can you make the sun not shine so bright?" one of the spacewalkers joked during the orbital work. "It's shining right in my eyes."

Yurchikhin and Misurkin are part of the space station's six-person?Expedition 36 crew. Their crewmates ? fellow cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, NASA's Chris Cassidy and Karen Nyberg and European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano ? remained inside the International Space Station during the spacewalk.

Misurkin and Yurchikhin were lighthearted during the six hour and 34 minute excursion. They joked with Russian Mission Control about being hungry, paused occasionally for a photo and commented on the beauty of the Earth from space.

"I guess we're flying over South America," one of the spacewalkers said at one point. "Gorgeous."

Aside from the new module preparation work, the cosmonauts also replaced a fluid control valve panel on the Zarya module, installed a new science experiment on the exterior of the orbiting laboratory, and retrieved two older experiments.

They installed tethers between handholds to be used by cosmonauts and astronauts on future spacewalks, however they weren't able to mount all of them in time. The remaining tethers will be installed during a future spacewalk, NASA officials said.

Monday's spacewalk marked the sixth excursion for Yurchikhin, a veteran cosmonaut making his fourth spaceflight. It was the first for Misurkin. Before this spacewalk, Yurchikhin logged 31 hours and 52 minutes of spacewalking time.

Six more spacewalks are planned for this year, four Russian and two American. The U.S. spacewalks are scheduled to take place on July 2 and 9.

Monday's excursion marked the 169th spacewalk for maintenance and assembly performed on the $100 billion orbiting laboratory. The?International Space Station?was built by 15 countries represented by five space agencies, and construction began in 1998. It has been continuously staffed by rotating crews of astronauts since 2000.

Three planets in habitable zone of nearby star: Gliese 667c reexamined

June 25, 2013 ? A team of astronomers has combined new observations of Gliese 667C with existing data from HARPS at ESO's 3.6-metre telescope in Chile, to reveal a system with at least six planets. A record-breaking three of these planets are super-Earths lying in the zone around the star where liquid water could exist, making them possible candidates for the presence of life. This is the first system found with a fully packed habitable zone.

Gliese 667C is a very well-studied star. Just over one third of the mass of the Sun, it is part of a triple star system known as Gliese 667 (also referred to as GJ 667), 22 light-years away in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion). This is quite close to us -- within the Sun's neighbourhood -- and much closer than the star systems investigated using telescopes such as the planet-hunting Kepler space telescope.

Previous studies of Gliese 667C had found that the star hosts three planets with one of them in the habitable zone. Now, a team of astronomers led by Guillem Anglada-Escud? of the University of G?ttingen, Germany and Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire, UK, has reexamined the system. They have added new HARPS observations, along with data from ESO's Very Large Telescope, the W.M. Keck Observatory and the Magellan Telescopes, to the already existing picture [1]. The team has found evidence for up to seven planets around the star [2].

These planets orbit the third fainter star of a triple star system. Viewed from one of these newly found planets the two other suns would look like a pair of very bright stars visible in the daytime and at night they would provide as much illumination as the full Moon. The new planets completely fill up the habitable zone of Gliese 667C, as there are no more stable orbits in which a planet could exist at the right distance to it.

"We knew that the star had three planets from previous studies, so we wanted to see whether there were any more," says Tuomi. "By adding some new observations and revisiting existing data we were able to confirm these three and confidently reveal several more. Finding three low-mass planets in the star's habitable zone is very exciting!"

Three of these planets are confirmed to be super-Earths -- planets more massive than Earth, but less massive than planets like Uranus or Neptune -- that are within their star's habitable zone, a thin shell around a star in which water may be present in liquid form if conditions are right. This is the first time that three such planets have been spotted orbiting in this zone in the same system [3].

"The number of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy is much greater if we can expect to find several of them around each low-mass star -- instead of looking at ten stars to look for a single potentially habitable planet, we now know we can look at just one star and find several of them," adds co-author Rory Barnes (University of Washington, USA).

Compact systems around Sun-like stars have been found to be abundant in the Milky Way. Around such stars, planets orbiting close to the parent star are very hot and are unlikely to be habitable. But this is not true for cooler and dimmer stars such as Gliese 667C. In this case the habitable zone lies entirely within an orbit the size of Mercury's, much closer in than for our Sun. The Gliese 667C system is the first example of a system where such a low-mass star is seen to host several potentially rocky planets in the habitable zone.

The ESO scientist responsible for HARPS, Gaspare Lo Curto, remarks: "This exciting result was largely made possible by the power of HARPS and its associated software and it also underlines the value of the ESO archive. It is very good to also see several independent research groups exploiting this unique instrument and achieving the ultimate precision."

And Anglada-Escud? concludes: "These new results highlight how valuable it can be to re-analyse data in this way and combine results from different teams on different telescopes."

    Notes

[1] The team used data from the UVES spectrograph on ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile (to determine the properties of the star accurately), the Carnegie Planet Finder Spectrograph (PFS) at the 6.5-metre Magellan II Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, the HIRES spectrograph mounted on the Keck 10-metre telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii as well as extensive previous data from HARPS (the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) at ESO's 3.6-metre telescope in Chile (gathered through the M dwarf programme led by X. Bonfils and M. Mayor 2003-2010.

[2] The team looked at radial velocity data of Gliese 667C, a method often used to hunt for exoplanets. They performed a robust Bayesian statistical analysis to spot the signals of the planets. The first five signals are very confident, while the sixth is tentative, and seventh more tentative still. This system consists of three habitable-zone super-Earths, two hot planets further in, and two cooler planets further out. The planets in the habitable zone and those closer to the star are expected to always have the same side facing the star, so that their day and year will be the same lengths, with one side in perpetual sunshine and the other always night.

[3] In the Solar System Venus orbits close to the inner edge of the habitable zone and Mars close to the outer edge. The precise extent of the habitable zone depends on many factors.

How does your project impact the community you grew up in?
Alabama has one of the largest deaf and blind institutes in the South, yet it has very few interpreters. Year after year, the number of people taking jobs in interpretation is declining. The goal of my project is to create a standard global method of communication between blind and deaf people without the presence of an interpreter.

Who are your scientific inspirations and why?
Watching the Helen Killer movie, I wondered how could a blind person who hears communicate with a deaf person who can see. My first guess was by touching. I visited the AIDB (Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind) and met with Mr. Larsen Turk, the director, who happens to be blind. It was a very inspiring visit. Mr. Turk introduced me to students at my grade level who are blind and deaf.
