How to Get Your Business on Apple's Passbook

The long-term?overall impact of Apple?s Passbook has been a hot topic over the last two months since it was launched with iOS 6 on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

But one thing is for sure: if you?ve got a business ? small, medium or large ? where getting people in the door is important, and are looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of?McDonalds,?United Airlines,?Eventbrite,?MLB,?Starbucks,?American Express?and others, you should at least be looking into Passbook.

We wanted to go over the basics of what constitutes a Passbook ?Pass?, and give you some insight into how to go about building your own Passes from scratch, because, unlike building a full-fledged iOS app (or even a mobile friendly version of your website), Passbook in most cases should require less development time to get your brand onto someone?s iPhone (although like anything, the more complicated the Pass the more work will be required).

Also, for businesses that don?t want to bother with development at all, even though Passbook functionality has just recently been introduced, there is already a healthy number of still-kinda-in-beta third-party services that promise to take most if not all of the technical aspects out of creating Passes, and we take a quick look at those as well.

DIY Passes

passbook overview Dont Pass this up: Getting your business on Apples Passbook, DIY style

First of all, it?s important to understand that Passes are not apps?? Passbook is an app (that is installed by default on iPhones with iOS 6 nd can?t be removed), but the actual Passes (coupons, whatever) are just a file type that only works on iOS 6 (iPhone, iPod Touch ? not iPad right now) and in?OS X 10.8.2.

When a user clicks on a Pass file (for example: example.pkpass) on any of those devices it will add it to Passbook, and, if the user has iCloud set up, it?will sync the Pass across all of the user?s devices. So a Pass can be completely independent of an iOS app ? or, if you do have or are planning to build an iOS app, Passbook can be integrated into your app as well.

There are currently five Pass types; Boarding Pass, Coupon, Event Ticket, Store Card, or ?Generic? (yes, that can cover a lot of things) and each of them has their own look and feel, although in all cases, the look is generally a solid color background with as little text as possible and a 2D barcode that can be read by laser and optical scanners. Apple ? a bit smugly ? suggests that you could use the camera of an iPhone/iPad as your in store scanner.

Unless you run an airline, train or bus company, we?re guessing the use of the Boarding Pass, um, Pass, isn?t on your radar.?The other four, however, are all Passes that many businesses that rely on getting people to walk in the door can use. For example, a fitness club could use the Coupon Pass to get new members, who then could get a Store Card they could use daily as a membership card, and if the club held a special event, the Event Ticket Pass could even be used as well (although most likely you?d just use the Store Card for entry, but we?re being hypothetical here).

For each of these Passes, you can also set date/time and location alerts that push to a user?s home/lock screen at the appropriate place and time. Beyond the simplified, digital wallet interface of the Passbook app, and of course the tremendous number of iPhones in use, these place/time push notifications should be very attractive to many businesses.

Even better, like the rest of a Pass, businesses have the ability to push changes to the Pass to alter these parameters (so if your event gets delayed, all you have to do is push out the time change and the Pass will show a notification at the new time).

passbook timelocation Dont Pass this up: Getting your business on Apples Passbook, DIY style

Passes are two-sided ? the front is your coupon/ticket/membership card/etc., and the back has your contact information, the option to delete the Pass from Passbook, and a link that opens up your iOS app if you a) have one, and b) the user has installed the app. While it?s obviously a bit obscured on the back of the card, if you do have an app and the user hasn?t downloaded it yet, this is a nice little bonus channel for app installs, although it will probably be a small one.

The .pkpass file is a compressed (zipped) file that contains the images, text, and server files that constitute the Pass. The server commands that you?ll need to code to run a basic Pass aren?t very complicated ? but of course, if you are building a very dynamic Pass that heavily integrates into your back-end systems, it will most likely get much more complicated. The good news is that Apple has some very clear documentation on developing for Passbook, and simple, non-dynamic passes are pretty straightforward.

The compressed Pass file must be signed using an Apple developer key, and this is an important point: according to Apple?s rules, all Passes must be signed by a unique developers key that is owned by the business that this producing the Pass. Apple says that if you use a ?contractor? they should be using your development key that is associated with your brand/identity/business etc. If you already have an iOS app, you should be able to associate that with your Passes using this signed key as well.

How this rule meshes with the third-party apps we?ll cover below seems to be a grey area at the moment ? if there are any lawyers reading this, we?d certainly be interested to hear your take. However, if you share your own key (yes, you?ll need to cough up the $99 a year Apple development fee) with a freelance developer, you?re certainly in the clear with Apple.

Once you have a Pass ready, getting the word out about the Pass is simple enough, especially after Apple recently introduced the ?Add to Passbook? button, which gives visitors to your website, or readers of your email newsletter, a?recognizable?(at least eventually) reminder to add a Pass. Passes can also be shared or installed by a link without the badge (as with the ?Add to Passbook? badge, the user just clicks on the link and the device automatically?recognizes and adds the Pass to the user?s Passbook) as well.

So, if you have access to a development team and a designer, in our estimation you shouldn?t be afraid of building your own Passes ? especially if you don?t plan to make them to dynamic (for instance, changing remaining balances on the card in near real-time would be trickier), they shouldn?t take take too much development effort to complete.

Another bonus is that if you are planning multiple Passes of the same type (for instance, a weekly Coupon) most likely after you built it once, updating for new Passes shouldn?t take much effort. At the very least, if you have a development team and/or work with an outside developer already and are interested in Passbook, have them take a look at Apple?s documentation to see what kind of investment it will take to get going.

However, if you don?t have access to development resources (or just want a solution that takes the tech out of it), as we said, a number of services have already popped up that offer Pass creation and management.

Pass creation services

Since the launch of iOS 6 in September, there has been a wave of services/startups that are focusing on tools for marketers to build, share and track Passes.

As Passbook becomes used more widely, marketers and business owners ? many of whom have no development resources or experience ? will want an easy to use but powerful service to build, distribute and track the success of Passes. A very similar ecosystem was created for Facebook Pages as well as of course for mobile apps themselves, but all things being equal, Passes are much closer to the development commitment needed for Facebook Pages than they are to mobile apps, so it?s not surprising these services were able to get up and running so quickly.

In a not-t0-distant-future article we?ll do a full-review of all of these and other similar services (many of which seem to be, quite frankly, in, or still hardly out of, beta), but if you are interested to try them out now (some have a trial period) before our review, here are some that we?ve hit upon so far in no particular order:

If you know of any other services like these, please just let us know in the comments and we?ll take a look for our review.

So, if you?re a business that is thinking of getting going with Passbook, hopefully this article has taken a little bit of the fear out of the way, and you can start thinking about what you?d like to start offering users and whether to do the development on your own, find a developer to work with or give a third-party service a shot.

Herbivore defense in ferns

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2012) ? They dominated Earth for 200 million years and numerous different species can still be found all over the world: mosses, horsetails and ferns. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany, have now found out that bracken ferns (Pteridium aquilinum) do not release any volatiles when they are attacked ? unlike many of the now dominant and evolutionary younger flowering plants. Such an emission of volatile compounds may attract the pest insects' enemies, such as ichneumon wasps or predatory bugs, that parasitise herbivores. Nevertheless, volatile emission could be also elicited in fern fronds, if they had been treated with plant hormone jasmonic acid. Jasomonic acid induces the synthesis of volatile substances in flowering plants. This suggests that ferns can in principle mobilise this kind of defense reaction. However, they do not use this indirect defense to fend off herbivores.

Ferns are so-called vascular cryptogams, because they don't produce flowers and seeds like the currently largest group of plants, the spermatophytes or seed plants. Ferns reproduce and spread entirely via spores. Their metabolic activities and especially their defences against herbivores, however, are similarly efficient in comparison to flowering plants. Ferns can be found in large populations all over the world, although their evolutionary age is more than 400 million years.

Botanists consider the bracken fern Pteridium aquilinum as one of the most widely distributed plant species. It can be found in the most different habitats. Herbivores attack bracken ferns strikingly less often than flowering plants. One explanation for this phenomenon could be that fern fronds contain especially toxic substances that keep pest insects at bay: Chemical composition analysis detected indanones, cyanogenic glycosides and tannins, amongst other substances. But can those "living fossils" also use indirect defences against their enemies, like other plants do?

Beans, corn, cotton, poplar trees, tobacco plants and potatoes: These and other flowering plants are known to produce the plant hormone jasmonic acid in their leaves after herbivore attack. Jasmonic acid stimulates the synthesis of volatile substances, such as compounds of the terpenoid family. This defence strategy can be used by plants to attract the enemies of herbivorous insect larvae. Venkatesan Radhika, PhD student in the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry of the institute, wanted to find out, whether bracken ferns could also emit these attractants when they were attacked. She used larvae of two insect herbivore species to damage the fern fronds: fern specialist Strongylogaster multifasciata and the generalist herbivore Spodoptera littoralis, which feeds on many different plants. She also used a robotic device, MecWorm, which continuously punched a limited area of the fern frond with a metal bolt, thereby mimicking the mechanical wounding caused by feeding herbivores. The result: The fern fronds release only very small amounts of volatile compounds, if at all. Even the signal molecule jasmonic acid could hardly be detected in the fronds.

However, if fern fronds were directly treated with jasmonic acid, they responded like the leaves of flowering plants and they released a typical odour bouquet. The scientists studied this effect in more detail and discovered that the release of volatile terpenoids from the fern could even be induced by treatment with early precursors of jasmonic acid synthesis (OPDA and linolenic acid). Biochemical experiments revealed that these volatile terpenoids are produced by the same metabolic pathway already known from flowering plants. "It is likely that the herbivory-induced accumulation of jasmonic acid is not sufficient to trigger the production of volatile compounds in our experiments," says Wilhelm Boland, director of the department.

Could it be possible that ferns do not need indirect defences by means of volatile emission? Is the presence of highly toxic substances in the fern fronds sufficient to fend off herbivores? "We can only speculate," says Boland. Indirect defence strategies may have evolved from originally direct defences (e.g. in the Chinese ladder brake, Pteris vittata) or, on the other hand, in the context of pollinator attraction to volatiles, which is a trait that has naturally evolved in flowering and seed-producing plants and not in flowerless ferns, the scientist continues. It remains fascinating though, that even without apparent indirect defences bracken ferns successfully colonize our planet to this day.

Oracle Warned The World About Autononomy - Business Insider

As HP takes a massive charge for its $11.1 billion purchase of software company Autonomy a year ago,?Oracle gets to say "We told you so."

Last year, Oracle published a blistering set of documents directly contradicting Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch's claim that he hadn't tried to sell his company to Oracle.

HP said this morning that it's taking an $8.8 billion writedown, largely due to alleged accounting fraud at Autonomy.

The two companies, once friendly, now spar viciously and compete directly in the high-end computer hardware business.

In late September 2011, a month after HP's then-CEO, L?o Apotheker, completed the Autonomy deal, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said Lynch had tried to sell Autonomy to Oracle in a conference call with analysts. Lynch denied Ellison's claim.

Oracle turned around and published the slide deck that it said Mike Lynch had presented when he visited Oracle and offered to sell his company. Oracle says it wasn't interested in Autonomy "because Autonomy?s current market value of $6 billion was way too high."

In one press release the company said:

Mike Lynch, Autonomy CEO, then publicly denied that his company had been shopped to Oracle.? Specifically, Mr. Lynch said, ?If some bank happened to come with us on a list, that is nothing to do with us.? Mr. Lynch then accused of Oracle of being "inaccurate." ? Either Mr. Lynch has a very poor memory or he?s lying.

Autonomy's slides that are still hosted for public viewing on Oracle's site. Oracle never expressed concern about the validity of the numbers or Autonomy's accounting?just the company's valuation. But Oracle's statements about Lynch certainly appear in a new light.

Lynch has denied HP's allegations as "false."

Oracle declined fresh comment to the situation, but here is Oracle's press release from 2011:

Another Whopper from Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., September 28, 2011

Oracle issued the following statement:

?Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch continues to insist that Autonomy was never ?shopped? to Oracle. But now at least he remembers and admits to meeting with Oracle President Mark Hurd and Doug Kehring, Oracle?s head of M&A, this past April. But CEO Lynch insists that it was a purely technical meeting, limited to a ?lively discussion of database technologies.? Interesting, but not true. The slides Lynch showed Oracle?s Mark Hurd and Doug Kehring were all about Autonomy?s financial results, Autonomy?s stock price history, Autonomy?s Price/Earnings history and Autonomy?s stock market valuation. Ably assisting Mike Lynch?s attempt to sell Autonomy to Oracle was Silicon Valley?s most famous shopper/seller of companies, the legendary investment banker Frank Quattrone. After the sales pitch was over, Oracle refused to make an offer because Autonomy?s current market value of $6 billion was way too high.

We have put Mike Lynch?s PowerPoint slide sales-pitch up on the Oracle website ? Oracle.com/PleaseBuyAutonomy ? with the hope Mike Lynch will recognize his slides, his memory will be restored, and he will recall what he and Frank Quattrone discussed during their visit to Oracle last April. Yesterday, the Autonomy CEO did not remember having any meeting with Oracle. Today, he remembers the April meeting and inaccurately describes how it came about and what was discussed (see next paragraph). Tomorrow, he will need to explain his slides.

Mike Lynch describes his meeting with Oracle: ?On one of my trips to SF (April 2011), Frank Quattrone whom I have known for a long time offered to introduce me to Mark hurd. Oracle was a customer and I have never met him, so it was a good opportunity. Frank does this from time to time on my visits, he has introduced me to many people. . NOTE: Frank was not engaged by Autonomy and there was no process running. The company was not for sale. I recall meeting with mark and someone else I believe called Doug. At the start of the meeting they joked that frank was there to sell them something. Frank and I made it clear that was not the case. We then met and had a lively discussion about database technologies. The meeting lasted approximately 30 mins. Frank is happy to confirm this.?

Dalton State College professor honored

DALTON, Ga. (AP) - A Dalton State College psychology professor has been named a U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council of Advancement and Support of Education.

Christy Price's varied teaching techniques are 1 of the reasons she earned the special honor, which was announced this week. Students in Price's classes often listen to a short lecture, use social media, work on a case study, role play and discuss an issue in small groups - all during one class.

Price says it's important to teach young students raised in a multimedia age with more than just lectures.

The U.S. Professor of the Year awards were established in 1981, and Price beat out about 300 nominees to earn the honor.

Inspired by Cy Twombly?s Rome, 1966

16. Nov, 2012

So you?re a maker of artisan tiles, and a painter who intrepidly surfs the web,?scouting out?symbols that Carl?Jung?and Joseph Campbell?thought we all might find meaningful on some level.

And you come across a photo.? Of the artist Cy Twombly.? In Rome, posing for a Vogue magazine article, the shot taken by Horst P. Horst in 1966.

But it?s not the artist, or even his paintings that strike you as the?most interesting.? No.? It?s the floor and the patterns you find in?its massive stone tiles.

So what do you do?

If you?re Justyn Livingston of Metolius Ridge Studios, you create a new line of tiles from what you see.

?He was rather handsome, fashionable and dressed well, and he?d juxtaposed his paintings with Roccoco furniture,? she says.? ?But on the floor were these stone patterns, on a scale so simple and graphic.?

Thus was born her Grafik Collection of tiles for walls and floors, borders and backsplashes.? It?s a timeless look that?s at once familiar but new.? The motifs have been used for centuries by artisans the world over.

?The clover pattern has been used by the Russian Orthodox Church, the Celts, the Moors, the Native Americans and the Christians,? she says.

She sees possibilities in putting the Grafik collection together with either traditional or contemporary interior design.? In essence, it defies categorization at a time when designers are mixing things up.

?You won?t go back 20 years from now and say: ?That?s so 2012,?? she says.? ?You can mix it up with your parents? and grandparents? stuff, and with new things too.? It?s enduring ? and European.?

Just like Twombly, the mid-century modernist, posing for Vogue in the Eternal City.

Things To Remember When It Comes To Self Improvement ...

A great way to better your lifestyle, is to improve your self through personal development. Read this article to discover what kind of actions you should be taking, and what kind of attitude you should have towards life to be happier.

Do what you can to remove unnecessary stress from your life. Avoid over-reacting when something doesn?t turn out the way you want, because it can cause you stress. Expect occasional setbacks as you work to achieve your goals. Keeping this in mind will make it easier to handle any challenges that come your way.

Don?t solely focus on your outside looks; have a look at the person you are within. It really does not matter what expensive clothing you wear, or if you look like someone from a magazine shoot. Your personality and skills are what will get you through life. Work on improving the person inside instead of focusing on superficial improvements.

TIP! Therapy might be the solution for people who have serious issues. Self help books are useful to an extent, but they lack the substance or personal touch that a therapist can provide to a patient.

Look for reading material that inspires you and encourages you to be your best. Religious books are very uplifting to some, while others may prefer inspirational quotes, autobiographies or poetry. It is a good idea to turn to something tangible when you are in need of a little push to keep going through the challenges that life has to offer.

Let go of your worries. Many times, worry is about a scenario that has yet to occur, and may never occur. Instead of worrying, think about the worst thing that could happen, and prevent it. This will help you feel prepared in the event of a tragedy but also keep living your life.

If you want to get more from your self improvement then take care of your physical self. Not getting enough sleep, getting a lot of exercise, and eating well can help you stay on top of your game, and help you win at self improvement. While it may sound simple, this is sometimes one of the most difficult things to do.

TIP! Strive to be the best at whatever it is you do. You should always try to be the best you can be.

Focus on changing just one thing about yourself at any given time. It may be that you have several such things which you could concentrate on, but by selecting just one, you stand a better chance of prevailing. It is also more likely that the personality changes will endure long-term, because it is easier to maintain these adjustments if they are done gradually.

By becoming more healthy inside and out, you will be setting yourself up for success. It?s a well-known fact that a healthy body is a happy body. When you radiate health you are feeling strong and mentally alert. You will spend less time on health issues and more time enjoying your life. Making choices that lead to a healthy lifestyle should be a part of your daily routine.

Always remember as you work on developing yourself that you deserve to be better, and that it will benefit you more than anyone else. You need to be aware that you owe that to yourself. When all is said and done, you will not feel any regrets because you know you worked to the best of your ability.

TIP! A critical step of personal development is the realization and acceptance of your insignificance. If you understand that there is a lot you can learn and that you have room to grow, you can gain proper perspective.

There is no way to make everyone in your life happy, so it is best to focus on first pleasing yourself. You are essentially responsible for your happiness; however, this don?t mean you should use people to get what you want. Being sure to stay true to yourself can really enhance your path to self improvement.

You need to be comfortable working and promoting inside your strengths? boundaries. Celebrate your own diversity and remember that although you may not be able to do certain things as well as you?d like, there are things you can do that others can?t do nearly as well. Never focus on the skills that you haven?t mastered. It is far more productive to look for new opportunities to develop the skills that you naturally possess.

Organization is key if you expect to keep track of your progress. By taking a large goal and breaking it down to more manageable segments, you will see that completing your goals has become easier. You can watch your progress through daily planners, or, you can devote a whole journal specifically focused on your personal development targets.

TIP! Do you find yourself consuming alcohol far too often? Are nicotine or other destructive habits something that harms you? Your body can best be described as a temple; make sure you treat it as such. If you want to make enhancements to your lifestyle, eliminating bad habits is a big part of this.

You must know what you want out of your life in order to develop personally. Use these goals as a way to measure your successes.

If you are falling sort and not meeting goals, step back and look at your issues. Do an Internet search for people pursuing the same goals. Note any differences between their strategies and yours. You could have impossible expectations of yourself or just not have a committed dedication to solving your problems.

By now you have probably already thought of a few ways that you would like to improve yourself and your life. These tips can help you boost your personal development, be a better person, and live a better life.

TIP! Understand what you want from your life. Following through is the next step.

P.S.-If you love personal development and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging with it, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions ===> Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass personal development plan in the industry?s history!

'Dirty money' affects spending habits, new study finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 13, 2012) ? Looks matter -- even when it comes to money. A new study co-authored by a University of Guelph professor has found that currency's physical appearance dramatically affects consumer behaviour.

People are more likely to spend dirty, crumpled currency and hold on to new bills, according to the study forthcoming in the Journal of Consumer Research and available online now.

But in social situations -- and especially when they're looking to impress someone else -- people reach for new bills even when they have older, higher-denomination currency on hand.

"Basically, the physical appearance of money matters more than traditionally thought," said Theodore Noseworthy, a professor in Guelph's Department of Marketing and Consumer Studies who conducted the research with Fabrizio Di Muro of the University of Winnipeg.

It's an important finding for many reasons, Noseworthy said, primarily because it challenges some long-held beliefs that we perceive only the nominal (face) value of money.

"We tend to regard currency as a means to consumption and not a product itself. In other words, it should not matter if it's dirty or worn because it has the same value regardless," he said.

"But what we show is that money is indeed a vehicle for social utility, and that it's actually subject to the same inferences and biases as the products it can buy."

In five different studies, the researchers gave subjects new or old bills and asked them to shop and spend. In all of the studies, people spent more and took more chances with older, worn money.

All of the studies found the same main reason: people's aversion to "dirty money."

"It's the 'ick' factor," Noseworthy said. "The idea of touching something that others also handled: people want to rid themselves of worn currency, because they are disgusted by the contamination from others."

He said people value a crisp new bill because they take pride in it, especially when they can spend it around others. People were more likely to spend more of their new-looking currency, even if they had to use four $5 bills rather than one crumpled $20 bill.

"It turns out money itself can be part of conspicuous consumption," Noseworthy said.

This research has caught the eye of authorities who print new currency and take "old" money out of circulation, particularly in an economy driven by consumer spending, said Noseworthy. The study might also interest Canadian authorities, who recently introduced more durable polymer bills that will likely look "new" longer.

Daily Kos: My Interview with Bill McKibben: The Math We Do as ...

mckibben-dothemath_12
For 25 years the best climate scientists have gone up to Capitol Hill and testified and explained what was going on, and nothing has happened. We cannot keep doing that year after year. It's like you're on the phone with the customer service department and they put you on the music ? if you listen to it for half an hour, okay, but if you listen to it for 20 years you're an idiot. At some point you gotta hang up and say, "we need to talk to the guys who actually run this store."

- Bill McKibben, 11/10/2012, SF Green Festival

For anyone not sure why Bill and his 350 team are so adamant about doing the math, his now legendary article Global Warming's Terrifying New Math in Rolling Stone Magazine earlier this year (Rolling Stone Editor to Bill: "Something odd is going on ? your piece has ten times as many 'likes' on Facebook as Justin Bieber's.") is a must-read. It lays out exactly why we can no longer afford to accept the status quo of an unregulated fossil fuel industry, or solely recycle and garden our way out of this pickle.

I was personally intrigued as well as encouraged by the recent elevation of mathematics as the new star of American public discourse. First, Bill Clinton whacked Republican budget and tax fantasies with the "Arithmetic" hammer. Then Nate Silver became a quasi rock star for simply getting his poll numbers right during election season. Finally, the ultimate triumph of arithmetic on election night with Karl Rove trying to explain the Math You Do As a Republican to Make Yourself Feel Better.

With lunacy and denial clearly on the ropes, what better time in history to finally come to grips with the math that has our planet's ecosystem on the brink of collapse: that, in just a cosmic second, we are burning fossil fuels that took millions of years to form and in the process are on the fast track to dumping so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that it'll literally knock the planet from under our feet if we don't start getting serious about changing our ways.

As everyone seems to be going all "reality-based" these days, this may indeed prove to be the short window in human history we have to graduate from arguing about whether global warming is happening to figuring out what we're going to do about it.

These were the thoughts going through my head when Bill McKibben stepped into the Mars Bar's garden patio for our lunchtime interview. Along with 350's Anna Goldstein and Ashley Malyszka as well as Joe Lamb of the Borneo Project, they joined Deb, myself, and 350's Jamie Henn, who had already been chatting for a bit. Kossack think blue brought her video camera, and before Bill's lunch had arrived we were drilling down into some deep shit. (pun intended) ?

So here it goes. The audio below includes the ten minutes of our lunch party during which we weren't goofing off, the transcript was edited just a bit for clarity, and I'm hoping that think blue will post the video once it's edited, along with her own thoughts about the day.

mckibben-dothemath_04Sven: So how's it been so far, Bill? I know you guys got a big divestment from Unity College in Maine and from the City of Seattle, right?

Bill: Yes, the Seattle Mayor said they're going to be figuring out what they can do, but what's been amazing so far is the fired-up nature of people. I suppose it could have gone either way. Maybe after the election everyone could have been like four years ago, "okay, we've done our work, now Barack will handle things." Clearly people are on the one hand extremely happy about the election, but on the other it's like "now is when we go to work." Thank heaven.

Sven: Is there anyone else you can report that's on the verge of signing on? Universities? Cities?

Bill: Hampshire College is all but divested. They're 98% of the way there. Their president for some reason doesn't quite want to call it divestment.

Sven: What are the sticking points?

Bill: The big sticking point ? and this is going to be a years long slog, I mean, this is very hard work ? is that this is the most important industry on earth. It's hard to have a portfolio without a lot of fossil fuel in it. It takes big, conscious effort to do it. It takes realizing that above all it's a moral question.

Sven: And we're all intricately interwoven with it, private and public sectors, all our lives...

Bill: Absolutely.

Sven: I like that one line in your Rolling Stone article where you say, "Since all of us are in some way the beneficiaries of cheap fossil fuel, tackling climate change has been like trying to build a movement against yourself." That one strikes me very deeply.

Bill: I think what people are figuring out is that we all are implicated in the consumption of fossil fuel, there's no way to live on this planet and get around it. But most of us would be just as happy if everything we did was powered some other way, you know? People are very open to the idea that they don't want to be profiting from this wreckage, even if they have to participate in it on some level. Election season is a good time to be doing this too, because everyone is really conscious... for a little while (laughter at the table). It's just how much money these guys are spending to perpetuate their system of doing things.

Sven: You know how Bill Clinton said in his speech at the Democratic Convention how there's that one word, "arithmetic!" I was thinking, "so here's 'Do the Math' and at the same time this Administration is pushing the arithmetic meme.

mckibben-dothemath_03Jamie: It's really been interesting, the math meme as it spreads. Toyota, unbeknownst to us, their whole thing to promote the new Prius is, "Do the Math." They're literally using the same phrase on their billboards. It's almost like we're aligned corporately, although we're not. But they have big mathematical chalkboards. I think people are hungry after all that rhetoric and bombast of the election to actually have some simple, hard facts.

Sven: Are there some other specific areas that can be tackled as far as the Obama Administration goes?

Bill: It's not like the election changed everything politically. John Boehner still runs things and we still got tons of people in Washington who are way too plugged into the machine, but there are things that the President can do by himself. The most obvious, easiest dunk shot is Keystone. (Keystone XL pipeline). I mean, the guy delayed it for a year to give time for more study, so in that year Mother Nature filed her public comments: You know, we had the warmest year in history, the Arctic melted away, we had an insanely epic drought, and now we've had a storm that looks like something James Cameron designed that flooded large parts of the most important city in the world. So after a year of study it seems improbable ? I mean, in Washington it seems completely probable to everybody that they'll approve it ? but in the real world it somehow seems improbable that he would say, "oh, okay, I think it's a good idea to go pour all this carbon into the atmosphere."

Sven: And you wrote about that in your Rolling Stone article, too. "Is it going to take a big storm to wipe out Manhattan..."

Bill: It was horrible. I'm glad I didn't write any more, because I went back and reread it, and the article said, "What if there were a huge drought across the American Midwest or a massive storm that swamped Manhattan?" I'm glad I didn't say, "What if a giant wildfire raged across San Francisco!?" (laughter at the table)

Sven: I have one more question. I'm from Germany and we've been fighting hard against the nuclear industry since the late 1970s. When Fukushima happened last year, all of a sudden Chancellor Merkel decided to shut them all down. What's relevant to the Do-the-Math tour is that Siemens, one of the biggest German multinational companies, said, "okay, we're not going to do nuclear anymore."

Bill: GE said the same thing.

Sven: They did?

Bill: Jeff Immelt (GE CEO) said, "this doesn't make sense economically."

moving-planet_55Sven: Because my question was what would it take for the oil companies, what kind of a deal would there have to be for them to say, "you know, it's not worth it for us, the externalities are going to catch up with us." They know they're ignoring externalities, right?

Bill: At the moment, unlike the nuclear guys, they're making a fortune. Exxon makes more money than anyone has ever made, by a lot. So it's hard to get them to see past that at all. And that's why one of the points of putting this kind of pressure on them is to make them start to realize that they're eventually ? hopefully sooner than later ? going to come up against some regulatory constraint that makes them keep some of their reserves in the ground, that they're not worth as much as they think they are. Ten years ago they all thought that maybe they were gonna have to turn into energy companies, and they started investing in wind and solar and things. But then they stopped because they were making more money than anything.

Sven: So we have to take the fight straight on? There's no appeal to reason or that a big event like Hurricane Sandy would affect them?

Bill: It does not seem to slow them down. (Table erupts in mimicry of greedy oil and tobacco executives). The good thing about business people is that they're ultimately practical. If one path is constraint, they will go down another one. These guys are perfectly capable of making lots of money putting up solar panels. I have no doubt that there's an immense amount of ability to execute at Exxon. They have good scientists, good managers, and all of that. They can't make quite as much money because you can't meter the sun, you know, but other than that they would do fine. They're just doing SUPERfine right now.

Pretty strong stuff, don't you think? What I like most about Bill is that in addition to being a fierce fighter and truth teller he has a huge heart. You can just feel his compassion and love for life and all living things oozing through the declarations of war on the fossil industry.

absolut disasterAnd it's not a paradox, it actually makes perfect sense and you can feel it. The best way I can explain it is like being witness to an abusive relationship of people you care about. Is the most loving way to respond to idly stand by so as not to interrupt the routine that both victim and abuser have become comfortably numb to? Or do you intervene, at the risk of rocking the boat and offending everyone, because you know that given new circumstances both parties could live up to a much higher potential?

I'm posing this question not only because I think it is relevant to all of us who consider themselves stewards of the earth, but because it resonates deeply within myself. I am at heart a peace-loving, harmony-seeking, and glass-half-full kind of soul who believes in the goodness of humanity and the rightness of the universe, with a live-by-example, be-the-change-you-wish-to-see-in-the-world view of the future. By nature, I shy away from confrontation, not necessarily because I'm fearful of the consequences, but because strategically, most of the time the confrontations are not worth the energy spent ? people just get used to your bitching and take you less seriously. Spend your outrage equity wisely, I say.

But then there are things that are worth standing up for, things so big and imbalanced and important and unjust that they must force us out of our comfort zones, wherever that may be. That's what I think this existential dilemma of watching these fossil giants shoveling heavy loads of coal and oil onto a sinking mothership is asking of us. This unprecedented time in history is asking us to defy ourselves, to be creative, passionate, light, and resilient. To stand up and fight, but come from a place of love, wit, compassion, knowledge, and truth. As Bill said at the Green Festival, "we're not going to outspend Exxon, so we'll need other currencies to work in, and those are the currencies of movement: Passion, spirit, creativity, and sometimes we have to spend our bodies."

Bill's non-radical suit. Photo by Debra Baida

We asked people who were coming to the Keystone XL protest if they would please put on a necktie or a dress, because we wanted to make an important visual point that there is nothing radical at all about anything that we're asking for. We are asking for a world that works a little bit like the one we were born into. That's not radical, that's a conservative request. Radicals work at oil companies. If you are willing to amass a huge fortune by altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere, then you are engaged in the most radical acts that any human beings have ever been engaged in. And we have got to absolutely stop them from doing that. We have to do it peacefully and non-violently, and firmly. And we have to do it fast, and we have to do it together. I do not know that we can win this fight, because the science is rough and the other side has all the money. What I do know from going all over the world is that it is gonna be a fight. There are lots of people ready to go.

Bill McKibben, 11/10/2012, SF Green Festival

After the interview, as we were walking across Brannan St. to the Concourse Exhibition Center where Bill was going to give his Do The Math pep talk, I still wasn't quite sure what I was going to do about it all, other than to just keep writing about ecocities, clean energy, zero waste, environmental justice, simple living, calling out the oil companies for their wreaking of death and destruction, and living my life treading lightly and inspiring mightily.

When Bill took the stage, the atmosphere was sizzling. I think a lot of people in that room were asking themselves the same question - what can I do to help?

mckibben-dothemath_10

One of the things we learned in the Keystone XL protest was that we can stand up to the fossil fuel industry, but another thing we learned was that it took a lot of work and we're not going to be able to stop climate change one pipeline, one coal mine, one fracking well at a time. We'll fight all those things but we have to go not just on defense, we have to go on offense too. The point of the Do The Math tour is to spark the next phase of the environmental movement, which is all about taking on that industry directly.

So how do we do it? The first step is to get institutions ? colleges, universities, churches ? to divest their holdings in fossil fuel industries. Bill reminded us that 25 years ago it was not okay if you were at a college to profit from investments in businesses that were involved in apartheid in South Africa, and people all over the country rose up. Invoking Nelson Mandela's first trip out of prison to thank the students and ultimately the University of California who had forced the trustees to divest 3 billion dollars worth of stock, he implored all the students and university associates in the audience to once again step up. (note: Deb will post a b&w photo essay based on this particular subject)

It was the next part, however, that made a light bulb go on in my head...

mckibben-dothemath_13

We've marched a lot on Washington over the years, but we have to march on some other places. Are there people here who will join us come shareholder meeting season in the spring who will march on San Ramon where Chevron has its headquarters and Dallas where Exxon has its headquarters? We're going to need you!
Did he just say San Ramon? That San Ramon in the East Bay, less than 50 miles from where I live? I'd go there to creatively shake some shareholders awake. But I don't have a car, don't want to borrow one, and BART doesn't stop there. So.... I'll take my bicycle! Hop on BART. Get off in Pleasanton or Walnut Creek. And Bike The Math to Chevron Headquarters!

Who's in?

To bring it back to another bus trip that took place almost 40 years ago:
mckibben-dothemath_16There are going to be times when we can't wait for somebody. Now, you're either on the bus or off the bus. If you're on the bus, and you get left behind, then you'll find it again. If you're off the bus in the first place ? then it won't make a damn.

- Ken Kesey, from The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test

I'll leave you with the final 30 minutes of Bill McKibben's riveting speech at the Green Festival, after I remembered to push the "record" button...

It wasn't the end of the world to go to jail. The end of the world is the end of the world, and that's why we're doing this work that we're doing.

PS: For those of you in Washington, D.C., this call to action from 350.org's May Boeve just landed in my inbox:
Hi friends,

We're going back to Washington to stop the Keystone XL pipeline.

We always knew this was going to be a long fight, that ours was a temporary victory; but after seeing the devastation of Hurricane Sandy -- and all the other sobering, often tragic ways climate change has made itself starkly visible this past year -- we?re even more committed to winning this battle and shutting this pipeline down.

Can you join us in Washington this weekend? This Sunday afternoon, November 18th at 3:00 PM, we?ll gather at Freedom Plaza and march to the White House. Please sign up here: 350.org/Nov18

With such short notice, we know many of you may already have plans. And, to be honest, this weekend?s action won?t be the last. It?s going to take more to get this job done -- more protests, more people, more chances to stand in the way of this thing getting built. Are you with us for the long fight? Take the pledge, and share it with your friends: 350.org/pledge

The Keystone XL pipeline would connect the tar sands in Alberta, Canada to oil refineries on the Gulf Coast. It would stretch 1,700 miles and cross 6 states, threatening freshwater supplies in America's agricultural heartland and deepening our dependence on some of the dirtiest energy on the planet. It would mean ?game over? for the climate, as NASA?s James Hansen says.

With the election freshly behind him, President Obama needs to know that we're still here, and that we will still hold him to the promises he made way back in 2008. If he's serious about tackling climate change, the President needs to reject Keystone XL once and for all.

We?re not going away until that happens. This is our moment. Are you with us?

Onward,

May & the 350 team

PS. Sunday?s action will coincide with the DC stop of the Do the Math tour, and we?re going to have a camera crew with us in the theater and on the street. Tune in to the livestream at 1:00 here: 350.org/KXL
