BBM hitting the BlackBerry Beta Zone for Android, reports of iOS beta also surface

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) may be entering the final furlong as it approaches its much hyped, long awaited cross-platform release with a new version hitting the BlackBerry Beta Zone. Emails are reportedly hitting selected inboxes inviting participation in the cross-platform program for Android 4.x devices, while the same report claims that iOS beta testing is also being conducted.

Screenshots and the splash screen of what is claimed to be the [Android version] of BBM have also surfaced, and it's as if you're looking at it on a BlackBerry 10 device. It essentially looks to be a carbon copy visually of the BlackBerry 10 BBM app, which if carried over to iOS will certainly stand apart from the crowd.

The report also claims that BBM for iOS requires iOS 6 and above and is also being tested outside of BlackBerry. But, at this point no firm details or images have emerged. Naturally, beta testing an app on Android is a somewhat simpler task that on iOS, since the apk file can be sideloaded with relative ease. iOS beta testing requires a little more involvement at the user end. If you do happen to be one of the lucky few included in the iOS beta test for BBM, be sure to get in contact, we'd love to hear about your experiences. After all the waiting, are you guys still excited for this?

SpaceX wins bid to launch Canadian radar satellites

Tue Jul 30, 2013 6:23pm EDT

(Reuters) - Privately owned Space Exploration Technologies was selected to launch a trio of Canadian radar satellites aboard a single Falcon 9 rocket, the company announced on Tuesday.

The California-based firm, also known as SpaceX, already is flying NASA cargo to the International Space Station, a permanently staffed research outpost that flies about 250 miles above Earth.

Owned and operated by Internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, the company is also working on a space taxi to fly astronauts to the orbital outpost.

A relative newcomer to the U.S. launch industry, SpaceX's client roster includes communication satellite operators Iridium, Intelsat SA, Orbcomm, Europe's SES, Hong Kong's Asia Satellite Telecommunications and Israel's Space Communication Ltd.

Also on SpaceX's launch manifest are spacecraft for the U.S. Air Force, NASA's science office and the governments of Thailand, Argentina and Taiwan.

"Our tally is nearly 50 launches," SpaceX spokeswoman Christina Ra wrote in an email to Reuters.

So far, the company has flown its Falcon 9 rocket five times, all from its Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launch site in Florida. The missions include two test flights and two space station cargo runs for the U.S. space agency, which contributed about $400 million toward the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule development.

SpaceX's 12-flight cargo delivery contract with NASA is worth another $1.6 billion. NASA also has a separate $525 million investment in SpaceX to upgrade its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule to carry people.

SpaceX's next mission, slated for September, will be to launch a Canadian Space Agency solar science satellite called CASSIOPE from a new launch complex at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Both CASSIOPE and the three-radar satellite now included in SpaceX's manifest are built by Canada's MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd, which selected SpaceX for the launches.

"SpaceX appreciates MDA's confidence in our ability to safely and reliably transport their satellites," SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said in a statement.

The radar satellite network, which is slated to fly in 2018, is designed for maritime surveillance, disaster management and environmental monitoring.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but SpaceX's website lists the cost of a Falcon 9 rocket at $56.5 million.

The Guardian: NSA's XKeyscore tool is its 'widest reaching' system for collecting online data

The Guardian NSA's XKeyscore tool is its 'widest reaching' system for collecting online data

Edward Snowden has said that he still has more information about the NSA than what he's already leaked, and we're now getting a look at another big piece of that. According to a new set of documents provided to The Guardian, the NSA is using a tool called XKeyscore that is said to be its "widest reaching" system for collecting information from the internet -- one that lets it examine "nearly everything a typical user does on the internet," as one presentation slide explains. That apparently includes both metadata and the contents of emails, as well as social media activity, which can reportedly be accessed by NSA analysts without prior authorization; as The Guardian notes, a FISA warrant is required if the target of the surveillance is a US citizen, but not if a foreign target is communicating with an American.

According to The Guardian, the amount of data collected is so large that content is only able to stored in the system for three to five days, or as little as 24 hours in some cases, while metadata is stored for 30 days. That's reportedly led the NSA to develop a multi-tiered system that lets it move what's described as "interesting" content to other databases where it can be stored for as much as five years. In a statement provided to The Guardian, the NSA says that "XKeyscore is used as a part of NSA's lawful foreign signals intelligence collection system," and that "allegations of widespread, unchecked analyst access to NSA collection data are simply not true. Access to XKeyscore, as well as all of NSA's analytic tools, is limited to only those personnel who require access for their assigned tasks." The agency further adds that "every search by an NSA analyst is fully auditable, to ensure that they are proper and within the law."

Ohio State RB Hyde suspended for at least 3 games

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde was suspended Tuesday for at least three games and will be required to meet additional obligations before he plays again for the Buckeyes.

Hyde had been suspended indefinitely after he was named a person of interest in an investigation into an alleged assault of a woman at a downtown Columbus bar. But police said earlier Tuesday that the case had been dropped.

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer then announced Hyde's punishment "for conduct not representative of this football program or this university." There was no word in the release on what Meyer meant by the "additional obligations" that Hyde would have to complete before he was allowed to play in another game.

Hyde, a 6-foot-2, 242-pound senior from Naples, Fla., scored 17 touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes to a 12-0 record last fall. He gained 970 yards on 185 carries.

Ohio State opens its fall camp on Sunday. The Buckeyes' opener is Aug. 31 against Buffalo, followed by another home game against San Diego State and then a trip to California to face the Golden Bears.

Police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said Tuesday that the alleged victim chose not to pursue charges against the Buckeyes' leading scorer and second-leading rusher a year ago.

"We were in the middle of our investigation," Weiner said. "The most important thing left to do was interview the (alleged) victim. She met with investigators on Saturday and informed officers that she didn't want to pursue charges."

Weiner said the case against Hyde was officially closed.

At the time of Hyde's suspension ? the same day three other Buckeyes were disciplined for off-the-field legal problems ? Meyer said: "I have a clear set of core values in place that members of this football program are constantly reminded of and are expected to honor. There are also expectations with regard to behavior. I expect our players to conduct themselves responsibly and appropriately and they will be held accountable for their actions."

The alleged victim approached police officers early on July 20 and said she was assaulted inside a bar at 303 S. Front St. Police looked into the allegation but Weiner said the case came to an end when she declined to pursue charges.

Besides Hyde, the other players disciplined on July 22 were star cornerback Bradley Roby and freshmen recruits Marcus Baugh, a tight end, and defensive lineman Tim Gardner. Each was involved in a separate incident.

Roby was arrested in Bloomington, Ind., and is facing preliminary charges of misdemeanor battery resulting in bodily injury for making contact with a bar employee. He was prevented by Meyer from representing Ohio State at last week's Big Ten football meetings in Chicago.

Baugh was removed from all team activities and also will sit out the first game of the season after being arrested for underage possession of alcohol and possessing a fake ID. Gardner, from Indianapolis was sent home and will not be a part of the 2013 team after he was charged by Columbus police with obstruction of official business.

Meyer has faced withering criticism in recent months for not meting out stiff discipline or controlling his players during his previous tenure as coach at Florida. Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who played for Meyer at Florida, was arrested and charged with murder earlier this year and dozens of Gators players were arrested while Meyer was in charge there.
